An authentic figurine looking exactly like your pet.
Are you looking for that perfect gift for a friend, or are you looking to remember that cheeky dachshund pup forever, even when your dog is no longer small? Or are you or a friend looking for a memorial for that adorable tan dachshund that sadly passed away recently? It might be time to consider getting a dachshund sculpture.
Here are 8 things to think about when you consider a dachshund figurine.
A dachshund sculpture can be made in numerous materials, the most common being bronze, stone, porcelain and plastic/resin.
The most expensive of these materials is bronze, but there is a big difference in "pure" cast bronze and cold-cast bronze. The traditional cast bronze technique depends on making a model, and covering this model (often wax) with a heat resistant mould. After removing or burning off the model, molten bronze is then poured into the mould to form the shape. Cold-cast bronze is actually a mixture of 50-70% resin (plastic) and some bronze powder that is poured into a mold. Most cheaper bronze dachshund figurines are produced with this much cheaper technique.
Other common materials for pet figurines are stone and white porcelain, that both give a nice finish to the piece. The cheapest material used is plastic, which is also the lighter of the different materials covered.
2. Custom vs standard (generic, painted generic, custom)
Most dachshund figurines are mass-produced and hand-painted in China.
A sculptor hired to do a completely custom sculpt of your pet will do the work locally and usually personally oversee the production of the sculpture. Arty Lobster is also using artists to sculpt each of our sculptures, and they are then 3D printed either in the UK or Netherlands to our specifications. It is very important for a high-quality piece that we have skilled sculptors and craftsmen at every stage of the process.
Indoor sculptures tend to go from the smallest 5cm tall to around 20 cm tall, to fit on a table or mantelpiece. Outdoor garden ornaments are typically bigger, even up to a lifesize dachshund sculpture.
Whilst physical shops like John Lewis or online like Amazon can deliver a generic dachshund figurine quickly, we think it is worth waiting a bit for a truly customised sculpture. A sculptor usually spends 3-6 months to prepare a cast bronze retriever statue, but Arty Lobster can create a sculpture in 4-6 weeks.
Price is always an important factor. The prices can be as cheap as £10 for a generic ornament, and as high as £3000 or more for a sculpted piece. Arty Lobster offers hand sculpted pieces, but due to the more efficient production and digital work, we are able to offer a standard full colour sculpture for merely £195.
6. Do they understand a dachshund
Another important question for a sculptor is whether they understand dachshunds in general and the looks of your specific dog in particular. From its humble origins as a badger-hunting dog in Germany, we now have very specific breed standards from The Kennel Club in the UK, The American Kennel Club or FCI the international association for dogs. Dachshunds are one of the most popular breeds in the world.
Any generic figurine tends to work on a standard breed, but it is important that a sculptor is able to go beyond the breed standard and look at the particularities of your specific companion. For example, according to the breed standard, there are only three hair lengths are permitted: smooth coat dachshund, long-haired dachshund and wirehaired dachshund. We all know that not all dachshunds fit this very narrow description, so our artists will look at the photos you give us and replicate the real fur of your dog.
7. Pure breed vs crosses
Many dachshunds are not pure breed, but mixed with one or more other breeds. At Arty Lobster, we love cross-breeds, because this is where our attention to detail and personal modelling works best. We will look at the pictures you give us a make sure that we really are modelling your specific dog. We can do pure crosses, like a doxle sculpture, but we are equally happy to do a sculpture that is vaguely Dachshund plus multiple other breeds.
Some of the popular crosses we have seen are
8. Are customers happy?
It can be a bit daunting to purchase a customised statue, as you can't see the end product prior to purchasing. One way to get more confident about the accuracy of a sculpture is to read the testimonials of previous customers. At Arty Lobster, we are proud to display testimonials from our customers to help you decide. We also offer you a 100% satisfaction guarantee to give you additional confidence in us.
I was over the moon when my husband surprised me with a the sculpture of Alfie, our adored family member of 13 years, after he had lost his battle with cancer. It is so like him its unbelievable, It has pride of place in our home.
The final element to consider is the quality of the finished figurine. A high-volume product often has minor imperfections due to mould wear or where the moulds join. If a figurine is made in China, there might also be some issues around the training of workers.
Arty Lobster only manufactures its sculptures in Europe, either in the UK or Netherlands. This is important to make sure that we are confident in the quality of each piece.
